How to Install IPTV on Kodi Using M3U Playlist 2026
Adding an M3U playlist to Kodi turns it from a local media player into a full-featured live TV system with hundreds of channels, an EPG guide, and catch-up TV. This guide is specifically for users who have an M3U URL from their IPTV provider — no Xtream Codes required.
What You Need
- Kodi 19 (Matrix) or Kodi 21 (Omega) installed on your device
- Your M3U playlist URL from your IPTV provider
- An XMLTV EPG URL (optional but recommended)
Step 1: Install PVR IPTV Simple Client Add-on
- Launch Kodi.
- Click the Settings gear icon on the home screen.
- Select Add-ons.
- Click Install from repository.
- Open Kodi Add-on repository.
- Navigate to PVR clients.
- Select PVR IPTV Simple Client and click Install.
- Approve any dependency prompts.
- Wait for the “Add-on installed” notification.
Step 2: Enter Your M3U URL
- Go to Add-ons → PVR clients → PVR IPTV Simple Client.
- Click Configure.
- In the General tab, change M3U playlist location from Local path to Remote path (internet address).
- In the M3U playlist URL field, paste your full M3U URL.
- Under Cache M3U at local storage, enable this option — it speeds up future channel loads.
- Click OK.
- When prompted to restart PVR, click Restart Kodi.
Step 3: Access Your Channels
After restarting Kodi:
- From the main menu, click TV.
- Select Channels to browse your full channel list.
- Click any channel to start streaming.
If TV doesn’t appear in the main menu, go to Settings → Interface → Skin → Configure skin and enable TV in the visible sections.
Step 4: Add an EPG to Kodi
Without an EPG, you’re browsing channel names blind. Here’s how to add one:
- Go back to PVR IPTV Simple Client → Configure.
- Click the EPG Settings tab.
- Change XMLTV location to Remote path.
- Enter your XMLTV EPG URL.
- Set EPG cache days to 7 (stores a week’s guide offline).
- Click OK and restart Kodi.
After restarting, go to TV → Guide to see the full EPG grid.
Organising Your Channels in Kodi
Channel Groups
Most M3U playlists include group names (e.g. UK Channels, Sports, Movies). In Kodi, these appear as channel groups under TV → Channels → [Group Name].
Favourites
To add a channel to favourites, navigate to it in the channel list, press the Menu button on your remote (or C on keyboard), and select Add to favourites.
Hide Channels
To hide channels you never watch, press Menu on the channel and select Hide channel. This declutters your list without deleting anything.
Advanced: Using Multiple M3U Playlists in Kodi
The PVR IPTV Simple Client only supports one M3U URL natively. If you want multiple playlists, you have two options:
- Merge playlists: Use a free online M3U merger tool to combine your playlists into one URL
- Use a different add-on: Add-ons like Proximus or IPTV Manager support multiple playlist sources
Troubleshooting M3U Playlists in Kodi
“No channels found”
- Paste your M3U URL directly in a browser — if it doesn’t load, the URL is wrong or your subscription has expired
- Check for trailing spaces in the URL field
- Ensure your internet connection is working
Some channels won’t play
- Try switching the Kodi player from ExoPlayer to InputStream Adaptive
- Install the InputStream Adaptive add-on from the Kodi repository
- Check if the specific channel has geo-restrictions
Buffering on HD channels
- Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi
- Lower the resolution setting in Kodi’s video settings
- Add buffer settings to
userdata/advancedsettings.xml: set buffermode=1
